Close to home, one of my favorite places to wander is Memorial Park. Despite being located in the middle of Houston, Texas and encircled by Loop 610, the undeveloped portion of the park between the picnic areas and Buffalo Bayou remains a lovely urban wilderness. A multitude of squirrels, birds, and turtles can be seen on every visit to its trails, along with occasional sightings of snakes, armadillos, and other wildlife.

If you follow the railroad tracks through Memorial Park, eventually you'll reach the railroad bridge over Buffalo Bayou and be treated to a look down through the willows |

As you descend from the height of the bridge downward toward the bayou, you leave the bright sun behind and enter the shadowed realm of whispering leaves and running water. |
