Buffalo Point -- Buffalo National River

Buffalo Point is located on the Buffalo National River in north central Arkansas, about 14 miles south of the town of Yellville. National Park lands bound the entire course of the Buffalo, from its headwaters in the Boston Mountains to its confluence with the White River. The following images give you a taste of what the area looked like during the trip I took with my brother in late October 1998.

Looking down the boat ramp at Buffalo Point

Buffalo Point bluffs reflected on the water.

Taking the road down to the river level from the Buffalo Point ranger station yields this view across the river to the limestone bluffs on the other side.

This shot taken from a canoe at Buffalo Point shows the bluffs reflecting on the calm surface of the river.

A View Upstream from the Point.

This shot was taken from Buffalo Point looking upriver toward Maumee. It was taken on the last day of our trip as the fall colors were becoming more pronounced and rain was entering the forecast.

Canoe Passing Buffalo Point

As we stood there, a canoe came around the bend in the river and headed past the point, following the path we'd taken two days before.

Clear Water below Buffalo Point

For those of you who live along the Gulf Coast and don't know what clear water looks like, here's a shot looking down from the point into the river. And yes, that's the bottom you can see quite clearly through 4 or 5 feet of water.
