Grand Canyon and Navajoland
Northern Arizona and Southern Utah
When the urge to travel took hold again in late 2000, my brother
and I set our sites on Arizona. The Grand Canyon and Monument Valley
were two particular destinations that caught our interest as we planned
the trip. After a good deal of research in which Carl took the lead,
the following travel plan took shape.
We flew from Houston to Flagstaff, AZ on Friday, September 15, 2000. After
spending the night in a bed and breakfast south of town we set off for the
North Rim of the Grand Canyon in a rented GMC Jimmy. After two memorable
days there, we retraced our steps back across the Colorado River, headed
north and east through Navajoland, and crossed the Utah border to Mexican
Hat. From there we took excursions into Monument and Mystery Valleys, as
well as the San Juan River Valley. After three nights in that area, we turned
south and east again, bound for Canyon De Chelly near Chinle, AZ. Two days
later, the final leg of our trip took us south to Holbrook, AZ where we hit
I-40 and turned west for the return to Flagstaff. Along the way we visited
the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert Monuments, the Meteor Crater, and
the lovely Sunset Crater just north of Flagstaff. We passed a final night
in the same bed and breakfast where we started the trip, before flying home
to Houston on Sunday, September 24, 2000.
The following pictures chronicle the journey from start to finish. A camera
has a difficult task capturing the grandeur and scale of some of the sites
we saw, but hopefully you'll enjoy the attempt
I hope enjoyed the pictures. It was truly an amazing trip
and I recommend the area to anyone with an appreciation for the rugged beauty
of nature. I hope to return and explore it again at more leisure at
some point in the future.
